Pike fishing shirt in retro linocut style: on the front, a pike bursts out of the lake at sunrise, and on the back, cattails stand in still water. Aqua green, orange, mustard yellow.
Product description
This pike fishing shirt captures the moment every angler waits for in the early morning: a pike leaps out of the lake at sunrise, and for a heartbeat everything else seems to stand still. Anyone who has ever stood on the bank on a misty morning knows that feeling. On the front the water churns, on the back cattails stand calmly in the same light. Between the two sides lies a small story from the lakeshore, told in the angular language of old linocuts. The image runs all the way around the shirt, so it does not look like a print stuck on top, but like a poster you wear.
On the front, everything starts with a curve. The predator shoots out of the water, its body bent like a fully loaded rod, jaws wide open. In the jaw you can make out the sharp teeth, and bright, hard hatching runs across the flanks, hinting at every scale. That gives the fish roundness and weight, even though the drawing gets by without any soft gradients. Beneath it the lake breaks open: stylized waves tip over in sharp edges, cream-white crests of foam spray upward, single droplets fly all the way into the sky. You can almost see the force of the leap tearing the smooth surface apart. Behind it the sun sits on the horizon and sends straight, strict rays fanning upward until they reach behind the predator, right through the banks of cloud. Head, jaws and sun sit close together, and that is exactly where your eye lands first.
Turn around and it gets quiet. On the back, five sturdy cattails stand in shallow water, their narrow leaves leaning slightly to one side. Here the water rests, crossed by closely spaced horizontal ripples with golden reflections. Where spray flies on the front, only stalks stand here. Dense, dark hatching gives the cattail heads their velvety surface. Behind the reeds glows the same sky, here without rays or a sun disc, and now the light feels warm instead of wild. It feels like the minute after the leap: the waves have settled, the fish has dived, and on the shore the morning simply carries on. This shift from force to stillness is the real heart of the design, and it turns two pictures into one story.
The colors hold both sides together. Deep aqua green carries the water and the dark parts of the fish, bright orange and warm mustard yellow fill the sky and sun, and cream white sets the highlights on spray and scales. Green and orange sit almost opposite each other on the color wheel, which is why the border between water and sky practically shimmers. Mustard yellow mediates between the two and leads the eye from the cool lake to the glowing sky. The lines look as if they had been carved out of a block with a gouge: clean areas, hard edges, dense hatching wherever shadows fall. Nothing is blurred, every shape has a clear boundary. It brings back memories of old fishing posters and of the teaching charts that used to hang in the fishing club's clubhouse, without feeling dusty.
This pike fishing shirt is made for people who set their alarm for 4:30 a.m. by choice, because the first cast on still water is the best one. It suits the pike angler who sorts lures by color just as well as the nature lover who stands on the dock in the morning and simply watches. If you like retro graphics, you get a motif that needs no slogan and still reads clearly from a distance. And if you would rather wear a picture than a logo on your chest outdoors, this is your piece. The chest tells of the hunt, the back of the wait, and whoever wears the shirt shows both: an appetite for adventure and respect for what lives beneath the surface.
Put on your pike fishing shirt when you head to the water, or wear it in town with dark jeans and sturdy boots. The Esox in mid-leap, the lake at dawn and the quiet reeds on the back carry a piece of the early morning into your day. Isakum laid out this motif as a wraparound graphic so that the leap on the front and the calm on the back are seen together, just as both belong together at the lake.
