The Standing Crusader T-shirt shows a guardian who stands calmly in the center of the image and holds his post, set in the clear visual language of a woodcut poster. The figure appears as a frontal half-length figure on a cream-colored ground that looks like a slightly worn sheet of paper, with bright margins and fine traces along the edges. Over the mail coif and the hauberk lies a surcoat with a red cross pattee, and the great helm with its narrow eye slit and its applied cross reinforcement turns its gaze straight ahead. A cloak in warm rust orange falls over the shoulders, the armored hand rests on the sword grip while the blade points diagonally downward. Nothing in this stance pushes forward, everything looks composed, collected and still.
All around the figure a landscape opens up in blue gray, rust orange and teal green. On the left a castle ruin rises on a wooded hill, with dark firs staggered in short rows in front of it. On the front the knight keeps watch, surrounded by ruin, colonnade and mountains, on the back stretches the land he surveys, wide and empty of people. Whoever wears the shirt has the figure on the chest and the quiet landscape at the back, two images that seem to come from the same hand and lie in the same color key. This connection gives the piece its quiet story, without a single word being needed in the image.
The same rust red appears three times and holds the front together. It sits as a narrow cross on the brow of the great helm, spreads out large across the chest and returns in the distant peaks that rise behind the shoulders. Above it a great deal of empty sky is left standing, cream white at the bottom and pulled into a deep blue toward the top, with ocher banks of cloud made of stacked arcs. Five birds sit in it as short hooks, two to the left of the helmet and three to the right. The crusader needs this expanse, otherwise the figure would fill the surface on its own.
